Situation Update: Venezuela Political Unrest

The ongoing violent protests recently seen in Venezuela are likely to continue in the near-term, despite President Maduro's proposed talks with the opposition.President Maduro has scheduled talks with the opposition for 10 April.

However it is assessed that these talks will do little to resolve the ongoing violent unrest that has unfolded across the country since Early February. It is advised that all non-essential travel be postponed until further notice. Essential travel should be undertaken with caution and travellers should minimise their movements when in-country.

Since early February, Venezuela has been affected by violent protests between pro-government supporters and anti-government opposition activists. These protests are likely to continue in the near-term. Protests are held on a near-daily basis through the country including in the capital Caracas.

Violence between the opposition activists and security forces or pro-government supporters has been increasing and the use of firearms is now commonplace. There have been nearly 40 reported deaths and over 550 injured protestors.
