On 2 April, the Constitutional Court accepted a petition for the removal of Prime Minister Yingluck Shinawatra. The petition – filed by the anti-government Yellow Shirts – relates to the removal of then National Security Council leader Thawil Pliensri.
It is currently unclear as to whether the court will action this petition, however, the removal of the prime minister and her government through a judicial coup would cause widespread protest from the supporting Red Shirts. The repercussions of such a move would likely be momentous and the resulting uproar from pro-government and pro-democracy supporters would likely be the largest seen in many years.
If you are travelling to Thailand in the coming months, it is essential that you monitor the situation as a court decision could significantly destabilize the security situation in Bangkok and throughout Thailand in a matter of hours.
